The History of Sutton Forest Cottage

The History of Sutton Forest Cottage

The cottage wasn’t always here in Sutton Forest! It may look like it’s been here forever, but it was actually relocated here from a property in Burradoo.

Millers Cottage, the original building on the site, was demolished in July 2009. Kathy, a local architect, had a client who was planning to demolish a timber cottage in Burradoo. She did a deal, and in September 2009 it was cut into three pieces and transported to Sutton Forest. Hovering over the footings already in place, the brick subfloor was built up to it, after which the cottage was lowered into place in its new home. Unable to resist the urge to improve the layout, Kathy straightened the original ā€˜Lā€™ shape of the plan into a straight line. The gaps in the roof were infilled, verandahs added front and back, a new bay window fitted and the cottage was complete! A new bathroom, fresh new paint, carpet, light fittings and other renovations, and it was ready to begin its new life as a self contained holiday cottage by June 2010.

Kathy and Greg have since found out that the cottage actually began life in Mittagong! Sometime in the 50’s it was transported to Burradoo, so this wasn’t its first move. Clearly, it is slowly on its way to Canberra
